6 Ways to Prepare for College Entrance Exams

Passing entrance examinations is one of the most important requirements in applying for a college or university. Depending on the policies of the school you intend to enroll at, your entrance exam results may decide whether to which program you will be admitted in, or if you’re going to be admitted at all. This is why it’s important that you take time to prepare for your entrance exams in order to get the best results that you possibly can.

If you don’t know where to start, these tips might help.

1. Visit the school before you take the exam – Visiting the school at least once before you take the exam will help you get an idea of the school grounds and would keep you from wasting precious time wandering around the campus while trying to figure out where the venue of the examination is. This would be especially applicable if you’re not only unfamiliar with the school, but the city or province where it is located as well.

2. Try to seek some advice from people who have already taken the test – Plenty of tips for students who are preparing for their entrance exams can be found on the internet; however, if anyone can give you valuable advice on what to study for the entrance exams, it’s the people who have taken the same exam you are going to take. Schools have different ways of conducting and evaluating entrance exams, so the more specific the information you can get is, the better.

3. Prepare everything you’re going to need for the test the day before – You may not be the type of person to pay attention to the smallest details, but making sure that you’ve got everything you’ll need for the test ready would help. You’ll need all the concentration you could muster before and while taking the exam, so the last thing you should be worrying about is where you put your pencil or if you actually remembered to bring your test permit.

4. Try to get as much sleep as you can the night before – The lack of sleep affects our memory and attention span – making it hard for us to focus and remember the answers to questions in examinations. If you must do some last minute review, avoid staying until the wee hours of the morning and catching up on sleep two or three hours before the exam. Instead, try your best to sleep early and continue reviewing after you’ve had some rest. It will make you feel more refreshed and receptive to new information.

5. Try your best to have a proper meal before taking the entrance exam – Like the lack of sleep, hunger can have an effect on our alertness – making it more difficult to spot seemingly minor details that could actually end up costing you valuable points. To prevent this, try your best to have a proper breakfast before you go. Studies are still being conducted to find out which particular foods can help boost our alertness the most, but it has been suggested in previous studies that test subjects that have eaten foods that are high in fibre and rich in carbohydrates scored the highest levels of alertness in some tests.

We hope that helps. If you can think of any other tips that have helped you before or you think may help other students, feel free to share it in the comment box below.
