Chad Vivas on Bachelor of Fine Arts

Name: Chad Vivas

Course Taken: Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising

Current Job: Illustrator /Graphic Artist

Job Responsibilities: Drawing original designs, converting drawings that were drawn freehand into vector images.

Why did you choose to take the course you did?

Because it matches my skills. I heard there are also good career opportunities in the field of advertising, so I enrolled in BFA and took advertising as my major.

For you, what was the most interesting part of studying BFA? What about the most challenging?

I liked Advertising Design because we would be tasked to analyze and comment on previously aired commercials. After that, we’d be asked to make commercials of our own so we could apply the things that we learned from the previous activity into our own project.

What kind of activities did you do when you were still a BFA student?

I can no longer remember them all; but we did some sculptures, story boards, and set designs among other things.

What were the things you learned from taking up BFA that you find very useful in your current work?

Using image editing software. Also, being familiar with the details of human anatomy can make a lot of difference in the drawings you make even though you might not notice it at first.

What skills or attributes do you think would come in handy for incoming college students who are thinking of taking the same course you did?

Creativity. You need to have a wide imagination to come up with different themes and concepts for your work. You also need to be resourceful because there will be times when you’d be forced to use a different concept or material for your work because of sudden changes in plans.

Do you have any advice for incoming college students who are thinking of taking the course you did?

Set your priorities. Do you want a good-paying job or do you want one that fits your interests? What if you can’t have both? Which one would be more important to you? Until you find the answer to those questions, try not to make any hasty decisions that you might later regret.

Do you think you chose the right course? Why or why not?

Yes. Because it fits my skills and interests, work is always fun and challenging.
