Christian Benedict Dioquino on Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies
Name: Christian Benedict Dioquino
Course Taken: Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Social Studies
Why did you choose to take the course you did?
I chose this course because I want to inspire the youth that I’ll be teaching someday by showing them why it’s very important to have a deeper and broader knowledge of social studies and not just of the disciplines in the fields of science and mathematics.
What was the most interesting thing about the course?
The most interesting thing about being a Social Studies major is that I get to travel a lot — not only locally but also internationally. Not only that, it’s not just a simple tour but an educational one that can help me learn more about the culture and history of the particular place that I am in.
What kind of activities did you do in your major subjects?
Activities like educational tours in our geography subjects, movie analyses in our history subjects, internships at government agencies in our law subjects, case interviews in our sociology subjects, market analyses in our economics subjects, and a LOT more.
What advice can you give to incoming students who are thinking of taking the same course you did?
Don’t be discouraged by some people’s belief that social studies is not a good discipline because it’s very important to study, especially nowadays that there are a lot of issues that affect people from all over the world. “To teach is to touch lives,” they always say, but in the field of social studies, “To teach Social Studies is to teach the world.”
What are the things you learned from the course that have proven to be very useful in your work?
Although I’m still studying, I believe that everything that I’ve learned in the course will really be helpful, especially in finding a job. Aside from teaching, Social Studies graduates can also become writers, museum curators, weathermen, archivists, researchers, economic planners, and a lot more.
Do you think you chose the right course?
Yes, absolutely! Graduating with a degree in Social Studies can lead to big opportunities in the future. The road is not that easy, but I assure you that it’s all worth it. Be a social studies major and change the world!
