Fritzie Rayco on Bachelor of Science in Biology

Name: Fritzie T. Rayco

Course Taken: Bachelor of Science in Biology

Why did you choose to take the course you did?

I took up Bachelor of Science in Biology because I wanted to pursue a career as a Doctor (with pediatricis as the preferred field of specialization).

What was the most interesting thing about the course?

I was very interested in studying the physiological and anatomical composition of man — the way it was built and how it functions, the connection of one organ to another, including the very basic component of it which is the cell. They all interest me a lot.

What kind of activities did you do in your major subjects?

We studied cadavers, did series of laboratory experiments like dissecting frogs, cats, and other animals, correlated our findings with what we know about the human body, and figured out how cell division takes place by observing it through a microscope.

What advice can you give to incoming students who are thinking of taking the same course you did?

Science, biology in particular, is a very interesting field if, and only if, it is your passion.  For some people, this can be boring. That is why it is so important that you are passionate about the course.  The course is very complicated and requires one to be more critical and have a keen attention to detail.

What are the things that you learned from the course that have proven to be very useful in your work?

After completing the course, somehow, I was able to understand how our body works and its relationship to the environment we live in;  how we should take care of ourselves while taking care of our environment at the same time.  Unfortunately, I was not able to apply what I’ve learned on the previous jobs that I had because their specializations were far from what I have studied (I graduated with a degree in BS Biology but my previous professional experiences were in the field of market research, financing, and shipping).  That said, I can prove that it does not matter what course you took, for as long as you have the determination to learn, you will be able to perform the task that was given to you.

Do you think you chose the right course?

Taking BS Biology with no plans of proceeding to medicine or pursuing a teaching career may lead to limited job opportunities because there are only few jobs available to biologists.  I will only recommend the course if you want to pursue the careers mentioned above and would really try hard to make things work. Otherwise, it’s probably a no.
