Several Philippine Universities Adopt New Academic Calendar

Following earlier proposals to adjust the academic calendars of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines to match the start and the end of classes of HEIs in other countries, ASEAN ones in particular, six universities in the Philippines have officially adopted a new August to May school calendar, replacing the old June to March schedule that educational institutions in the country have been following for a long time.

Included in the said universities are four HEIs from the National Capital Region — University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, and University of Santo Tomas — and two HEIs from Baguio City — Saint Louis University and University of Baguio.

Varied reasons have been given to rationalize the shift in academic calendars including global competitiveness and climactic factors, although, for now, the main consideration appears to be easing the exchange of students and faculty members between local and international HEIs by matching our academic calendar to theirs.

Aside from the HEIs mentioned above, a couple of other universities have also hinted at, or currently considering the idea of changing their academic calendars, but, so far, no official announcements have been made.
