TESDA Courses in the Philippines



In the past, vocational courses were mostly taken by students who do not have the financial means to pursue a four or five-year course  or those who haven’t figured out what they really want so they’re testing the waters first; however, thanks to the introduction of TESDA courses in the Philippines and the increasing demand for skilled workers both here and overseas, that trend has changed since.

If you’re not familiar with them yet, below is an overview of TESDA courses and how they can help you.

Description

TESDA courses are short vocational courses that were designed to help people acquire the skills necessary to carry out tasks associated with specific jobs or crafts. TESDA courses cover a wide array of expertise including engineering, health sciences, computer and information technology, business, and agriculture to name a few. Duration of the courses varies depending on the number and complexity of the skills you are expected to learn and demonstrate.

Technical Vocational Institutions

Technical Vocational Institutions (TVIs) are schools or training centers that are authorized to offer TESDA courses. Most of these are schools or training centers that have applied each of their courses for TESDA registration, but some of them are directly administered by TESDA itself or in partnership with a government institution. TVIs that are directly administered by TESDA usually offers TESDA courses for free or at a much lower price than TVIs that are not directly connected to TESDA.

Assessment and Certification

Certificates issued by TESDA are recognized by employers in the Philippines and abroad, so having one can be an advantage when seeking employment.

To obtain a TESDA certificate, you will need to pass the national certification exam for a specific skill like welding or electrical maintenance and installation for example. Assessment Centers for the different TESDA Courses all over the country are regularly accredited for this purpose.

Most of the time, you will be encouraged to complete specific TESDA courses before taking the exam in order to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass it, but if you already have plenty of professional experience and can demonstrate the same level of competencies as graduates of TESDA courses, you may be allowed to skip the training part and go straight to the assessment and certification part instead.

Career Opportunities

Plenty of career opportunities are open to graduates of TESDA courses, especially overseas where the demand for skilled workers is often high. You can find some examples of jobs that TESDA graduates can apply for on our article about in-demand jobs in the Philippines and abroad.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary depending on the school or training center that you will apply at, but they usually include the following: copy of Birth Certificate authenticated by NSO, a copy of High school or College Diploma, certified true copy of Transcript of Records, 1×1 Pictures, and Certificate of Good Moral Character.

Online Courses

People who cannot afford to attend traditional classes can now take TESDA courses online. By registering on their website, you can have access to different modules that will teach you how to perform specific tasks. The online program is still in the development stage, though, so only certain courses are available online and they do not facilitate online assessment yet.

      Different schools and courses have different requirements, so it’s best if you’ll check with the school or training center that offers the course to see if they require a high school diploma prior to admission.

      TESDA has some tie-ups with private companies so there are certain courses whose students are immediately hired by the companies right after graduating. We’re not sure which particular companies TESDA has current tie-ups with, though, so you might want to check with TESDA for more information.

    I just want to know if what courses are offered here in Iloilo City.
    And if there is a payment required in order to enroll for the chosen course or TESDA gives free training . Because to be honest I am not financially stable but I am willing to undergo training in order to support my family.       Most of the institutions directly administered or in direct partnership with TESDA offer the courses for free; private schools and training centers usually offer them for a fee. TESDA also gives out scholarship vouchers every year, but we’re not sure for which courses and at which particular schools they can be taken. For that, we suggest you contact TESDA directly so they give you more accurate and detailed information.

      There are some TESDA courses that didn’t mention anything about requiring a high school diploma; however, that’s just from TESDA’s end. We’re not sure if the training centers offering them have additional requirements aside those that TESDA requires. If you have some time to spare, try to check out the training regulations of the available courses and look for the “trainee entry requirements.”

      Yes, you can. Once you’ve gotten your ALS certificate that certifies that you have the same competencies as those of a traditional high school graduate, you can take any course that you want provided that you also meet the other requirements of the school you intend to enroll at.

      TESDA’s Programming NC IV mentioned VB in their course overview (as well as topics they did not specify but they may discuss). We’re not too sure if that was just a passing mention or if they would actually be teaching it in class, though. If you want to be sure, we suggest you call up the schools/training centers offering this course so they can give you a more accurate and detailed response.

      Call center agents are rarely required to be graduates of specific courses as long as you are a college graduate. Some call centers even accept college undergraduates, so it’s rarely an issue.

      If you really have to pick a course, though, those in the field of communication, information technology, business, and healthcare might give you an advantage.

      Most of the TESDA courses that we’ve seen so far require applicants to be at least a high school graduate. We’re not sure if there are exceptions, though, so it’s probably best if you’ll contact the school you’re thinking of enrolling at.

      You can find the usual admission requirements for enrolling in a TESDA course if you click on any of the TESDA courses above. Alternatively, you can also download the training regulations of the course your son wants to enroll in and look for the “trainee entry requirements.” Schools may impose additional requirements aside from those imposed by TESDA, though, so in the end, it would probably be best if you’ll ask the school directly.

      As for your second question, we rarely see companies that specifically require applicants to be graduates of a certain course. Usually, any vocational course, as long as it’s related to the position you’re applying for, would do. The automotive courses above might prove to be some good examples.
